Aqualand Prestige launches inaugural architectural design competition for Chatswood project
Chatswood is set to welcome an architectural icon with the launch of an innovative design competition for a new mixed-use residential project at 51-55 Archer Street. The competition invites three leading architectural and landscape design teams to reimagine this pivotal site, which is the amalgamation of four allotments. In keeping with Aqualand Group’s commitment to delivering projects of architectural merit, Aqualand Prestige’s inaugural project promises to deliver a design of exceptional quality that enhances Chatswood’s urban fabric, while emphasising sustainability and community engagement.
The architectural competition adheres to the Government Architect NSW Design Competition Guidelines, ensuring a transparent and rigorous process. Its goal is to select a design that embodies innovation, functionality, and environmental stewardship. The selected design will harmonise with the site’s unique context within Chatswood’s CBD, while addressing the need for high-quality mixed-use developments.
Spanning 1,767sqm, the site offers a canvas for a transformative project that incorporates premium residential towers, commercial spaces, and public domains. The design must blend luxury living with affordability, as 25% of the total floor space is earmarked for affordable housing. Public art and sustainability also take centre stage, reflecting Chatswood’s progressive spirit.
The shortlisted design teams invited to respond include architectural firms Woods Bagot, Team2 Architects, and PTW Architects, collaborating with landscape designers Tyrrell Studio, Place Design Group, and Aspect Studio, respectively. These teams will conceptualise visionary designs integrating insights from the Chatswood CBD Planning and Urban Design Strategy 2036.
A strong emphasis on sustainability underpins this project. Entrants must present environmentally sustainable designs (ESD) that prioritise passive energy strategies, resource efficiency, and urban resilience. With targets exceeding baseline BASIX requirements, the competition champions a greener Chatswood.
Design entries must connect with Country, recognising the site’s place within Cammeraygal Country. This entails integrating Aboriginal cultural principles and ensuring the development respects and celebrates its historical and environmental context. Through strategic landscaping, open spaces, and public art, the project will foster inclusivity and cultural appreciation.
Following initial concept development, teams will submit their final designs by mid-December 2024. An esteemed jury comprising representatives from the Government Architect NSW, Willoughby City Council, and Aqualand Prestige will evaluate the submissions.
The winning design will be announced in early 2025, with the successful team continuing to guide the project through its next phases to ensure the vision is realised with integrity.
This competition heralds a new chapter for Chatswood’s urban landscape. The winning design will not only elevate the city’s skyline but also set a benchmark for thoughtful, sustainable, and community-oriented urban development. Stay tuned for updates as we get closer to unveiling this exciting project.
